Anthropic told investors Wednesday its Q3 revenue hit $16.8 billion, up nearly 50% from Q2's $11.5 billion, ahead of a planned IPO. The same day it gave METR six staff employee-level access to its internal systems, with publication rights Anthropic cannot veto - the deepest external-audit arrangement any frontier lab has granted. Meta and Apple shipped an 816-billion-parameter open-weight model built to run across two to four Mac Studios.

Distillation of Claude is big enough that choking it off shows up in Anthropic's own numbers #
Anthropic said Oct 12 its new anti-distillation defenses cut data harvested by unauthorized copying 90% to 99%. Telling investors Oct 15 that distillation made up 5% to 7% of Q2 revenue before a 'material' Q3 cutback, Simon Willison calculated that if the share held, rival labs spent over half a billion dollars that quarter alone copying Anthropic's models. XBOW said Oct 13 its researchers used agents built on GPT-5.6 Sol to chain a V8 compiler bug, a WebP decoder bug and a Crashpad bug into a full Chrome sandbox escape in six days for about $40,000 in compute, collecting a $250,000 Google bounty. Humans still directed and assembled the final chain. The Hacker News, on XBOW's Chrome chain

WATCHChina proposes export controls on AI model weights and source code for the first time Updated midday #
China's Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Science and Technology proposed adding 23 AI technologies to its export control list, including large language models, agents, model weights and source code — the first time Beijing has put model weights themselves in scope. The proposal exempts open-source releases and research, and API access through websites and apps, but would require export approval for commercial model weights above unnamed capability thresholds. Public comment runs through November 15. Bloomberg
WATCHFBI charges OpenAI engineer with planting recording device in conference room Updated midday #
The Justice Department charged Abdulrahman Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national who worked as an OpenAI engineer, with using a device to intercept oral communications. Prosecutors say he hid an audio recorder in a television in OpenAI's San Francisco executive conference room around September 28, and OpenAI discovered it on September 30. He was ultimately caught after leaving a bag unattended; OpenAI security found a second recording device inside. The FBI alleged he also asked a productivity tool about OpenAI's building addresses, meeting rooms, calendars and executive locations. OpenAI said it has no evidence he accessed model weights, source code or customer data. Fox Business · The Hill, FBI charges
The long view
A year ago, Anthropic described its growth in annualized run-rate terms - about $9 billion by late 2025, a monthly snapshot multiplied by twelve. On Wednesday, it told investors its actual Q3 revenue alone was $16.8 billion, up nearly 50% from Q2, with an 11% operating margin after stripping out stock compensation - hard quarterly numbers, not a projection, filed ahead of a planned IPO. If this holds, the number labs use to describe growth keeps shifting from a flattering estimate to an auditable one exactly when investors are about to demand one.
