The long view
A year ago, Hugging Face was an independent company, the neutral hub every lab, cloud and chipmaker treated as common ground for open models, with no owner in the compute business. On September 3, Nvidia confirmed it is buying that ground for $12.9 billion, pledging to keep the platform "open, independent and compute-agnostic" with no Nvidia hardware required. The neutral layer of AI distribution now sits inside its largest supplier. If this holds, watch whether "compute-agnostic" survives contact with Nvidia's own roadmap the way few acquired "neutral" platforms manage to.
